Connecticut parents encouraged to give gift of time this holiday season

The holiday season is often associated with frenzied activity, but it is also a time when Connecticut parents have the opportunity to spend more quality time with their children. The Connecticut Governor's Prevention Partnership joins with the National Youth Anti-Drug Media Campaign in urging parents to give their teens the priceless gift of time by remaining involved in their lives and scheduling meaningful family time throughout the holidays. This time can be used to begin an ongoing dialogue about the benefits of staying free of alcohol, marijuana and other drugs.

"According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, each day more than 4,700 teens under age 18 try marijuana for the first time. And kids in Connecticut start drinking on average at age 11," says Susan K. Patrick, president of The Connecticut Governor's Prevention Partnership. "The good news is that parents are the most important influence on their teen when it comes to marijuana use and other risky behaviors. Two-thirds of youth ages 13-17 say that upsetting their parents, or losing the respect of family and friends, is one of the main reasons they don't smoke marijuana or use other drugs."

Family activities provide parents with natural opportunities to communicate important messages about staying-drug-free, while also enhancing relationships with their teens. Connecticut parents can also help to keep their kids drug-free by monitoring where they are and whom they are with, and setting rules with clear consequences for breaking them.

Lower levels of alcohol and marijuana use were found among teens whose parents monitored their activities and peer relationships, limited the time spent watching TV, gave them responsibilities around the house, and recognized their teen's successes and good behavior.

Free materials are available to help parents connect with their teens over the holidays and start a dialogue to help keep them drug-free:

The Connecticut Governor's Prevention Partnership was created in 1989 and is a statewide, not-for-profit, public-private partnership dedicated to keeping Connecticut's youth drug-free and safe. In his capacity as Connecticut governor, Governor John G. Rowland serves as co-chair along with John Klein, president and CEO of People's Bank. The Partnership is the lead drug abuse prevention organization in Connecticut. It has a 14-year track record of accomplishment, developing more than 2,300 new prevention programs that use mentoring, parent education, school support, youth leadership, media and community coalitions to reduce the substance-abuse risks around us. On an annual basis, the Connecticut Governor's Prevention Partnership provides services to more than 13,000 constituents in businesses, schools, colleges, community organizations, police departments and municipal governments.

The White House Office of National Drug Control Policy's National Youth Anti-Drug Media Campaign reaches youth ages 9-18, with emphasis on middle adolescents (ages 14-16), their parents and other adults who influence choices young people make to lead drug-free lives. The Media Campaign also teams up with civic and non-profit organizations, faith-based groups and private corporations to enlist and engage people in prevention efforts at school, at work and at play
