Connecticut Defense witness says cash was for car, not drugs

New Britain, Connecticut-- The defensen for accused city drug dealer claimed Tuesday he was carrying more than $2,000 at the time of his August arrest to purchase a car -- not drugs -- with his girlfriend.

Juan McRae, 29, of 126 Clinic Drive, Connecticut was arrested on narcotic sale charges Aug. 5 following a police stop.

Officers seized cocaine, crack cocaine and marijuana valued at more than $15,000, which they foundstashed in the roof of McRae’s silver Nissan Maxima.

Connecticut police also found $2,899 in cash on McRae, $90 of which was marked buy money supplied by officers to a confidential informant shortly before the defendant’s arrest, according to testimony.

McRae’s fiancee, Cheresse Cheatem, told the court Tuesday morning that she gave McRae about $3,000 in cash the day of his arrest because the couple planned to view, and possibly purchase, a 1992 Honda Accord at 6 p.m. that evening.

Cheatem testified the money was a portion of the proceeds she made from the sale of her home in New Jersey, having moved back to Connecticut in June 2002.

She said she withdrew $8,000 in cash July 18 and deposited $5,000 in a separate account, keeping the $3,000 difference in her home to buy a car.

McRae’s arrest reportedly came after a confidential informant, who testified last week to assisting Connecticut police in some 25 controlled drug sales during the last year, tipped Connecticut police off to the defendant’s alleged illegal activity Aug. 5.

While in the presence of an Connecticut officer, the informant arranged a deal for an eight ball of crack cocaine, 3.5 grams, while talking to a man known as "City" on a cellular phone.

The informant said he had previous dealing with "City" and was aware the dealer would be driving a Maxima when they met at the arranged location, the McDonald’s parking lot at 698 West Main St, Connecticut.

Connecticut police testified to setting up a surveillance of the meeting place.

Connecticut officers reportedly stopped McRae after he exited the parking lot and then discovered the drugs in the place where the informant told police McRae hid his stash.

Connecticut court records indicate the informant, who has an extensive criminal record including robbery and drug charges, was paid $250 for assisting police in McRae’s arrest.

Trial proceedings are expected to continue today at 10 a.m. in New Britain Superior Court, Connecticut.
